COMMENTS
A very fine album from NEMS Records, primarily featuring material lifted off the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’’ radio broadcast. This record features also the first complete versions of If You’ve Got Trouble and Goodbye. NEMS Records did a little editing on the Sgt. Pepper’s stuff, since sometimes the items were not played in their entirety. The bootleggers behind the NEMS company, probably from L.A., released quite interesting LPs during the eighties, and were in some competition with the bootleggers using the TMOQ label at that time. Among the other releases, they produced the Lost Lennon Tapes LPs series under the BAG label.
RELEASES
This LP appeared on a deluxe color cover, with a 1963 photo on the front and five photos on the back. The label was pinkish on the upper half, fading to light yellow towards the lower half, with drawings of four beetles and track listing. No distinct pressing rings can be seen on the label area. The vinyl was black. All the releases from the original masters had the same layout and cannot be distinguished.
INTEREST. It was an interesting record when appeared, and it is still a pleasant LP for its content. Many copies were pressed and distributed, so it still relatively easy to find. ***
COUNTERFEITS
NOT FOR SALE was counterfeited, probably in the early 2000's. The copies were very similar to the original record, with the same cover and labels, with some differences, mainly the smoother cardboard used for the jacket and the labels with the pinkish part limited to the upper part, up to midlength of the beetles, with most of the label yellow. The pressing ring at 12 mm from the spindle hole is clearly visible. The matrix number was always MOP-910-A / MOP-910-B, but written very small and shallowly imprinted, barely visible. The records were pressed on red or blue vinyl, with those on red vinyl being more common. Its sound quality is comparable to that of the original release.
A less common counterfeit, possibly pressed in Japan in the late 1980's, had the same cover as the original record. The machine-imprinted matrix number was MOP 910 A / MOP 910 B, the vinyl was green and the label was plain white. Same sound quality.
INTEREST. Not the original releases, but decent counterfeits, of good quality, with the addition of being on colored vinyl. Less common than the original version. ***
NOTE. The record NOT FOR SALE by Trade Mark of Quality Quarter Apple, later copied by Strawberry Records, has nothing to do with the NEMS release.
